The 1947 film "Green Dolphin Street" is set in the 1840's, first in England and then in New Zealand.
 
William Ozanne (Richard Hart) lives on the Channel Island of Jersey. He knows two young women, sisters Marianne (Lana Turner) and Marguerite (Donna Reed).
 
William ships out as a sailor and lands in China where he visits a shop. He purchases some items for the sisters. He then gets on a ship headed for New Zealand.
 
There he settles down and writes to Marianne to come out and marry him.
 
In the China shop he meets the proprietor and pays for his purchases with some coins.
