The 1979 film "The Black Stallion" is based on the 1941 novel of the same title written by Walter Farley.

The story is about a young American boy who survives a 1946 shipwreck off the northern coast of Africa. A black race horse also survives the wreck and the two become friends.

After the pair are rescued, both are brought to a town in the eastern United States where, with the help of a former horse trainer, the horse is trained and entered in a champion horse race.

The first scenes are set on a merchant ship sailing off the North Coast of Africa. Several men are playing cards and there is a "pot" of money on the table including various United States and foreign coins.

The film displays US silver dollars, British pennies, and other coins.
