"The Rifleman" was a half-hour Western series which ran on the ABC Television network
from 1958 to 1963. It was set in the 1800's in the New Mexico Territory.
Chuck Connors appeared as the rancher Lucas McCain and Johnny Crawford as his son Mark McCain.
This episode is titled "A Case of Identity" and was first broadcast on January 19, 1960.
Two private detectives come to town looking for a 12-year old boy who disappeared ten years ago.
The boy's father has offered a $2,000 reward for the boy. The father becomes convinced that Mark McCain
is his long-lost son.
The man offers Mark a silver-dollar sized coin of which both sides are shown. The prop coin
appears to have a head on one side.
1. Program title
Captain James Gordon and gunman Lon Perry arrive in town.
2. Detectives visit boys
Lucas rides up and joins the boys. James notices a birthmark on Lucas' right arm.
Aaron Wingate, a wealthy man, arrives and joins the detectives.
Aaron has been searching for his long-lost son Robert for ten years and now believes that Mark is Robert.
The three men ride out to Lucas' ranch.
3. Perry, Gordon, Aaron Wingate, Lucas
Lucas invites Aaron inside and the detectives leave.
4. Wingate, Lucas, Mark
Aaron tells Lucas that in 1871 a Mississippi steamship blew up killing Aaron's wife. The two-year old son was never found.
Back in town Aaron sees Mark and offers him a coin.
5. Wingate offers Mark a coin
The coin may be a silver dollar but looks larger than a real one.
6. Coin close-up
The prop coin has some kind of lettering on it.
Aaron is in his hotel room and meets the hotel boy named "Dollar Ten".
7. Wingate gives Dollar Ten the coin
Dollar Ten explains that he got the name when a man gave him that amount.
Gordon's gunman challenges Lucas and is shot.
8. Lucas threatens Gordon
Lucas hands Gordon to the sheriff. Aaron then admits that Mark is not his son.
At the ranch Lucas and Mark host Aaron and Dollar Ten. Mark tells Aaron that the boy is an orphan.
9. Wingate makes an offer
Aaron offers to adopt the boy and take him to his home.
