The 1959 film "Timbuktu" is set in French Africa in 1940. France has sent troops from it's African colonies to Europe to fight the invading Germans leaving only a few French Foreign Legionaires in Africa.

An Arab Emir Bhaki (John Dehner) organizes a revolt against the French. The Emir has few followers as he has a reputation for villiany including torturing people with large venomous spiders.

The Emir arranges to purchase stolen weapons from an American, Mike Conway (Victor Mature) who is secretly working for Foreign Legion Colonel Charles Dufort (George Dolenz). Mike takes time to romance the Colonel's wife Natalie (Yvonne De Carlo).

Emir Bhaki's men carry crude medallions with the figure of a man seated on a horse or camel. They use these medallions to identify themselves and also leave them on Frenchmen whom they have killed.

The Colonel wears a dress uniform with five military medals at an official function.
