The 1952 film "Singin' in the Rain" is a musical film set in late 1920's Hollywood when silent films were transitioning to sound films.
 
Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) is a popular silent film star whose main leading lady is Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen). Don's voice is good for sound but Lina has a strong accent. Don meets aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) and they fall in love.
 
The "Broadway Melody" dance sequence features gangster Roy Damron flipping a coin while his girlfriend Cyd Charisse performs a dance routine with Gene Kelly. The gangster ends the dance sequence by presenting Cyd with a necklace.
 
Gene tries to follow Cyd but is stopped by the gangster's two henchmen also flipping coins.
