The film opens with a description of the Great Depression of the 1930's.
Young Red Pollard and his father Mr. Pollard are living at a migrant camp.
 
Red Pollard brings his father two silver dollars that he has earned working at a nearby horse track.
The silver dollars are Peace dollars, minted from 1921 to 1935.
