1. Man encounters Maddalena in the woods
Maddalena (Phyllis Calvert) is a student at an Italian school run by nuns in 1919 Florence who goes to a forest to pick flowers. A man encounters her and sexually assaults her.

She returns to the school where she is told that her father has arranged her marriage to a business associate named Giuseppe Labardi (John Stuart). The marriage occurs in 1919 and produces her daughter Angela (Patricia Roc) in 1920. The Labardis have a house in Rome and a villa in Florence.

The major problem in the marriage is that Maddalena sometimes disappears for periods as long as a year. Giuseppe has taken Maddalena to doctors but has not learned where she goes or why. Some notes she has left mention the "Seven Moons."

The time is around 1938 and Angela has been at a school in England for five years and is returning to Italy. Her English boyfriend Evelyn (Alan Haines) is driving her in a sportscar and stops to ask a man named Nino Barucci (Stewart Granger) for directions.
