The first part of the film is set in 1944 when Indiana battles Nazis for the device. The film then moves to 1969 where he meets Helena Shaw whose father worked with Indiana in 1944. She also wants the device and they spend most of the film in car chases, gun battles, and finally travelling to Syracuse to locate the grave of Archimedes to recover parts of the device.
