The 2008 film "Fool's Gold" is a comedy adventure film about couple of Caribbean Spanish shipwreck treasure hunters who have been searching for a Spanish ship, the Aurelia, which sunk near the Bahamas in 1715. They encounter gangsters, a professional treasure hunter, and a wealthy father and his spoiled daughter. Spanish gold coins known as "doubloons" appear in the film.

The boat belongs to "Finn" Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) and his wife Tess (Kate Hudson). Tess has lost interest in treasure hunting and has divorced Finn. Finn and his partner, a Ukrainian diver named Alfonz, find part of a plate with a crest on it.

Finn convinces Tess that he has located the ship. Finn owes money to a local gangster named Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart), a former musician. Finn shows the plate to Bunny who takes it to Moe Fitch, a professional treasure hunter.

Fitch tells Bunny the plate may lead to something. Finn is pushed into the water and is rescued by a yacht, the "Precious Gem", owned by a millionaire, Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland) whose spoiled daughter Gemma Honeycutt is visiting him. Conveniently Tess is working on the yacht as a stewardess.

Finn tells his treasure story and Nigel agrees to finance him.

Finn finds an old Spanish cannon.

The cannon has a name plate of the Aurelia. Finn and Tess do some library research and find out that the Aurelia separated from the fleet and was ran aground on an island which is now owned by Bigg Bunny. Finn and Tess visit a church on the island.

The couple learn that the ship's crew placed the treasure in a "blowhole" which is underwater for most of the year. They happen to be on the island for the one month that the blowhole is exposed. Bigg Bunny and his henchmen find Tess and lower her into the blowhole where she finds some items and a small treasure chest. Every so often an ocean wave forces water out of the blowhole and pushes some old coins onto the rocks.

A flashlight and some coins are on the ground and one of Bigg Bunny's henchmen picks up a coin.

He picks it up showing one side of the coin.

The coin is an imitation "prop" coin based on a Spanish silver coin of the period. The legend would read "HISPANARVM REX" or "Spain King."

Bunny owns a seaplane and he takes Tess and the treasure chest into the plane. He drops the chest which falls into the water and onto his diver henchman. Bunny takes off with Tess and Finn on the wing and Bunny falls out of the plane. Finn and Tess then manage to land the plane. Later Joe Fitch's museum reopens with Finnegan as a partner. Finn and Tess have remarried.

The museum displays the recovered Aurelia treasure.
