The 1934 film "The Count of Monte Cristo" is based on the famous novel The Count of Monte Cristo by the French writer Alexandre Dumas.
 
In 1815 merchant ship officer Edmond Dantes (Robert Donat) is framed by three men for various crimes and sent to an island prison. Edmond meets another prisoner who gives him directions to a treasure located on the island of Monte Cristo After several years Edmond manages to escape to the sea and then to the island where he finds the treasure in a cave.
 
Some of the treasure is loose and some is in the traditional treasure chests which contain coins. Lots of imitation prop coins are used.
