A Mrs. St. Clair appears at 221B Baker Street, the residence of Holmes and Watson.
Only Dr. Watson is there.

She explains that her husband Neville St. Clair left for work two days ago and has not returned.
Holmes later appears and the pair visit Mrs. St. Clair's house.

Mrs. St. Clair visits the neighborhood and is accosted by beggars and children.

She runs into the building but two men tell her that there is no one living upstairs.
She later tells Holmes and Watson and they bring Inspector Bradstreet and some policemen to the building
where Mrs. St. Clair sees some of her husband's clothes. The Inspector finds Boone the Beggar there and arrests Boone
as a suspect in the murder of Neville St. Clair.

Neville explains that he discovered that he could make several hundred pounds a year as a beggar,
more than he could make at a regular job, by using makeup and his knowledge of English literature.

Inspector Bradstreet releases Mr. St. Clair but warns him that Boone the Beggar is to disappear.
