"Sherlock Holmes" was a British television series produced by Granada Television and broadcast from 1984 to 1994. Some episodes were broadcast under the title "The Return of Sherlock Holmes."

The series starred Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson.

This episode is titled "The Empty House" and was first broadcast on July 9, 1986.
It is set in 1894, three years after Sherlock Holmes disappeared at Switzerland's Reichenbach Falls in 1891. Dr. Watson and every one else had believed that Holmes was dead.

Dr. Watson is working as a police surgeon when Holmes reappears at his office. He explains that he has been travelling and returned to find the killer of a wealthy young Englishman.

Several people look at a desk which belonged to the dead man. On top of the desk are coins, including British gold sovereigns and silver half crowns.

Gold and silver coins appear on the desk.
They appear to be British sovereigns and half crowns of the period and most likely would have a portrait of Queen Victoria on them.

For two years I travelled to Tibet and amused myself by visiting Lhasa and spending some time with the head lama. I then moved through Persia and paid a short but interesting visit to the Khalifa in Khartoum.

Dr. Watson still lives at 221B Baker Street and has left Holmes' room untouched. They notice that there is a vacant house across the street and explore it.

They discover that from the house one can see their residence. Holmes suspects that someone else has been in the house and that suspicious men have been nearby.
