The famous 1950's and 1960's "Jungle Doctor"

Dr. Thomas Dooley was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1961.
He was a US Navy doctor who was assigned to Vietnam in the 1950's. In 1956 he resigned from the Navy and moved to Laos where he set up a small medical clinic. He wrote three popular books about his work which made him well known in America. |

Dr. Dooley was born Thomas Anthony Dooley III to a wealthy St. Louis Irish-Catholic family in 1927.
He spent two years at Notre Dame University and then graduated from Saint Louis University
medical school in 1953.
