Tower of London (1939)
Executioner Boris Karloff receives a groat in this version of the Richard III story
Prev Back Next
The 1939 film "Tower of London" is a film set in 15th century England and is about the scheming of Richard, Duke of Gloucester to become king of England (as Richard III).

The film is not based on Shakespeare's play Richard III but much of the story is the same with Richard being portrayed as a vicious deformed prince.

Here Richard is assisted by the fictional Mord, a deformed official at the infamous Tower of the title, while going about eliminating the men ahead of him in line to become king.

The film is a historical drama, not a horror film, although well-known horror film actors Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, and Basil Rathbone appear as major characters.

A man about to be executed gives a groat (four pence coin) to the executioner along with an insult. The coin is not shown in the film. Later a treasure box full of coins appears.

1. Title
A Foreword appears:

No age is without its ruthless men - who, in their search for power, leave dark stains upon the pages of History.

During the Middle Ages - to seize the Tower of London was to seize the throne of England.

In 1471 this has been done by Edward IV - who has violently deposed the feeble Henry VI and holds him prisoner.

Within the deep shadows of the Tower walls lives the population of a small city -- some in prison cells and torture chambers -- some in palaces and spacious lodgings -- but none in peace.

A web of intrigue veils the lives of all who know only too well that today's friends might be tomorrow's enemies...

Mord, an official at the infamous Tower of London prison, is working late:
