The 1958 film "The Barbarian and the Geisha" is about the first American Consul to Japan.
 
Townsend Harris (John Wayne) is sent to Japan as the U.S. Consul General in 1856. The Japanese do not like Americans and try to chase him out of the country.
 
Eventually Townsend Harris is tolerated and Governor Tamura sends a Geisha named Okichi to take care of him.
 
Townsend Harris meets Okichi and believing that she is a paid servant gives her an American silver dollar.
