The 1944 Russian film "Ivan the Terrible" is about the Russian tsar Ivan IV who was born in 1530, became the tsar in 1547, and died in 1584. He was known as "Ivan the Terrible" but that may be a mistranslation of a Russian title meaning "Ivan the Awesome".

The film was ordered by the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and was produced, written by, and directed by Sergei Eisenstein, a prominent Soviet filmmaker. The film was to consist of three parts but only parts one and two were produced.

The scenes with coins are in Part One only.
During Ivan's coronation two men pour large bowls of coins on Ivan's head. Later before a battle each Russian soldier places a coin in a large bowl.
