The 1985 film "The Goonies" is a about a group of pre-teen boys who live in the fictional "Goon Docks" area of Astoria, Oregon and have formed a club called "The Goonies."

The boys, accompanied by one boy's older brother and two teenage girls, find a pirate treasure map and decide to hunt for the treasure in order to use the money to stop their homes from being foreclosed and demolished to build a golf course. They are followed by three local criminals who also want the treasure.

The film is a comedy with some fantasy elements.

One boy has a doubloon portrayed by a large prop coin, later the boys encounter a hoard of real United States cents, and still later gold doubloon coins portrayed by more realistic prop coins.
