The 1938 film "Angels with Dirty Faces" is about a gangster and his childhood friend, a Roman Catholic priest.
 
James Cagney is William "Rocky" Sullivan, a gangster who has spent most of his life in prisons and Pat O'Brien is Father Jerry Connolly, a Catholic priest, who grew up with Rocky. Rocky is released from his latest prison sentence and sees Father Connolly who runs an athletic program for the neighborhood boys. He meets members of a boy gang known as the "Dead End Kids."
 
The Kids have a slot machine which they are taking apart. One boy holds some coins retrieved from the machine. The coins appear to be standard film imitation or prop coins.

As children, William "Rocky" Sullivan and Jerry Connolly attempt to steal from a railroad freight car. Jerry gets away but Rocky is caught and sent to reform school. He later enters the criminal life resulting in several prison sentences. Jerry becomes a Roman Catholic priest.

Rocky encounters the Dead End Kids when they steal his wallet.

Rocky visits Jim Frazier, a crooked lawyer, who is holding $100,000 for Rocky.

7. Rocky asks Jim for his money
Jim gives Rocky some money and tells him to wait for the rest. Jim then calls his henchmen and orders them to "take care" of Rocky. Rocky avoids the henchmen and is questioned by the police.

8. Rocky entertains the police
The police are forced to release Rocky, making him an even bigger hero to the boys. He gives the boys some money which they spend on clothes.

9. The lads dressed up
Father Connolly notices that the local boys are no longer showing up at his church or athletic center and blames Rocky.
 
Rocky has begun taking out Laury Martin, another childhood friend.

10. Rocky and Laury at the casino
Rocky gives Father Connolly $10,000 in cash for his youth athletic center.

11. Father Connolly refuses Rocky's gift
Father Connolly goes to a newspaper and launches a crusade against the gangsters.
 
Rocky, Jim, and another gangster Mac discuss what to do about him.

12. Rocky, Mac, and Jim discuss the Father's crusade
Jim and Mac plan to eliminate the Father but Rocky finds out and shoots Jim and Mac.
 
Rocky is arrested and convicted of killing his associates and is sentenced to die in the Electric Chair.

13. Father Connolly asks Rocky for a final favor
Father Connolly would like the boys not to admire gangsters and asks Rocky to act as a coward.

When Rocky nears the Chair he begins screaming and crying.
