The Republic of the United Netherlands existed from 1581 to 1795. It consisted of the provinces of Friesland, Gelderland, Holland, Kampen, Overijssel, Utrecht, Zeeland, and Zwolle.

The Republic produced the Lion Dollar (Leeuwendaalder) as trade dollars from 1575 to 1713. They circulated in the Middle East, the Dutch East Indies, the Dutch New Netherlands Colony, New Amsterdam (now New York), and throughout the American colonies.

The Republic also produced the larger Rix Dollar (Rijksdaalder) as trade dollars from 1606 to 1700. They also circulated in the American colonies but not as much as the Lion dollars due to their larger size.

The king on the Rix dollars is William the Silent, or William I, Prince of Orange (1533-1584), who was the main leader of the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish Empire.
